Avian pneumovirus is a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus belonging to the Metapneumovirus genus in the Paramyxoviridae family. aMPV (formerly known as Turkey rhinotracheitis virus) is a virus that infects primarily turkeys and, to a lesser extent, chickens. Other domesticated fowl such as pheasants can also be affected. Clinical signs being as mild respiratory symptoms such as nasal discharge, tachypnoea, and dyspnoea. If the reproductive system is infected, this would lead to a decrease in egg production. Transmission is via the respiratory tract and high stocking density allows the virus to spread more easily. The initial virus infection is commonly complicated by secondary bacterial infections. This results in high morbidity and variable, but often high, mortality. Infection of susceptible birds of any age can result in serious economic losses. The assay targets the gene that codes for the protein M2 of the virus matrix.
