Mycobacteria are widespread organisms, typically living in water and food sources. Some, however, including tuberculosis and leprosy organisms, appear to be obligate parasites and are not found as free-living members of the genus. Over 190 species are recognized in this genus which includes pathogens known to cause serious diseases in mammals.
