They parasitize, on the surface or intracellularly, a wide range of organisms including humans, plants, animals, and insects. Many species of Mycoplasma are commensal, living innocuously with their host as part of the natural flora of the body, with no detrimental effects. But when Mycoplasma acts as a pathogen they cause chronic but mild infections that rarely kill their host. More than 100 species have been included in the genus Mycoplasma with a high degree of diversity. The qPCR Test is specific for the no-mycoides cluster.
