Transmission is through direct contact with mucous membranes and their secretions or indirect contact where flies act as a mechanical vector.

M. capricolum subsp. capricolum infection occurs worldwide and appears widespread but has rarely been found in species of small ruminants other than domestic goats and, occasionally, sheep.

Most commercial flocks are M. gallisepticum free, however, and the disease is most frequently introduced from carrier birds being brought into the flock. Stress is thought to lower the poults resistance to the disease, like in CRD.

The bacteria can be transmitted from one animal to another by blood-feeding arthropods, such as fleas and ticks.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is a species of bacteria known to cause the disease porcine enzootic pneumonia, a highly contagious and chronic disease affecting pigs. This microorganism caused lesions in pigs infected with enzootic pneumonia (EP). EP is known to cause weight loss in pigs.

Mycoplasma hyorhinis detection test kit by using qPCR. Mycoplasma hyorhinis is often found as a commensal in the respiratory tract of pigs. It is thought to facilitate and exacerbate the development of diseases such as porcine enzootic pneumonia and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. capri (formerly known as M. mycoides large colonies) is one of the etiologic agents of the contagious agalactia, causing mastitis, arthritis, and infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a respiratory pathogen of domestic sheep, domestic goats, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and another caprine that can both cause primary atypical pneumonia and also predispose infected animals to secondary pneumonia, including Mannheimia haemolytica. Populations of M. ovipneumoniae in infected sheep are often found to have varying strains of the bacterium within one animal, but the different strains vary in virulence.
