Recent studies have broadened the list of known intermediate hosts to include birds, which can be an important link in the transmission to other animals.

OvHV2 is endemic in sheep populations worldwide and causes malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), a lymphoproliferative disease, in cattle, bison, and deer. OvHV-2 is related closely to Alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1). These viruses cause inapparent infection in sheep, their main reservoir hosts. However, MCF in pigs has been associated with direct or indirect contact with sheep. BMCF is an important disease where the reservoir and susceptible animals mix.
